![]() ![]() gives the drive designation you'll need If you go down that route you'll need to install "ufiformat" from the repos in order to format disks in a USB floppy. They are quite cheap (or were, last time I looked for one). I use a USB floppy drive on my netbooks and also the Dell Pentium II machine (Linux, Puppy 4.3 on that machine, doesn't recognize the 3½" internal drive for some reason). Bootable disks work too using this method. All work, even if the disk was corrupted/unreadable, as long as physically ok. I've created "fresh" disks in both 5¼" 360K and 1200K & 3½" 720K and 1440K formats. ![]() I thought about if the floppy or cable is broken but it would be wired if the same problem occurred at the same time on two different systems.I know this is an old thread and that you've disabled the floppy in BIOS for now, but did you try using dd to read or write floppy images from/to the disk? Can files be written to disk using commandline (cp etc.)? I've been doing this for a while now, archiving all the stuff I have on 3½" and 5¼" floppy disks and also to write to them, including images I made from freshly-formatted disks which can be used to create a fresk "blank" disk that works just as it should. And yes the power cable is connected properly. This means the cable can’t be plugged in incorrectly. Now I use the old floppy cable from my old system that’s has plugs in one of the holes on each side. The floppy is connected closest to the end of the cable that has the twist. How do I know witch one is the #1 pin location? I have used two cables just to make sure. I have had the same problem with the three systems I have built. The only thing I have found that could make any difference is the option to enable/disable “boot up floppy seek”. I have tried making some changes in BIOS. ![]() I have checked that the flat cable is inserter correct. Sometimes I get an error message that says that there is an O/I error. When I try to access it windows says that the floppy disk is not formatted. After I built my new system I have had problems with getting my floppy disk drive to work. ![]()
